A Day In the Life in 2045

6:00 AM I wake up to the sharp beeping of CHAD (Custom Humanoid AI Device). CHAD wanders the floors of my house every morning, designed to wake me up at the best possible time for my own health. Although he does not recognize the sleep needed by the mind of a moody teen and thinks that 6:00 a.m. is a reasonable hour to be awake. Starting my day is almost completely independent from CHAD other than their annoying wake-up call. However, when I finally leave my room, CHAD uses all of his amazing abilities to “help” me, such as accidentally tripping me, dropping my breakfast, and glitching while trying to make my toast.
7:00 AM The public schooling system has changed completely, to the point where it is just homeschooling with a strict curriculum. There are only live classes on Wednesdays. So, I call CHAD over to me, and he sits his clumsy mechanical body down on the sofa. CHAD is one of the cheaper household AI models but still has intelligence on par with the average person, meaning he makes a great video game player.
9:00 AM After losing to CHAD in every 2 player game I own, CHAD advises I stop playing and move around. I know it’s in his programming and he can’t help it, but it’s frustrating when the last thing you want to do is get up.
10:00 AM During my walk through the woods, I find a group of public cleaning AI, supervised by a few people, messing around. They must have been done with their routine morning debris clearing and were taking a break before moving locations. I was? amazed at how clean the area was and hadn’t noticed until I saw the group.
2:00 PM I finally wrapped up my work and got up from my chair to CHAD, who said he “made” me a snack, although I prefer the wording “got,” since all he did was bring me a bag of pretzels. By now my friends have also finished their work, and are at the door.
One asks, “Are you done with work for the day? We’re just heading out to the park.” “Yeah,” I responded, “Let me get my shoes.” CHAD must have heard me because the next thing I knew CHAD was trying to lift me up and put me into my shoes, rather than putting my shoes onto me. “CHAD, stop,” I said, “alright, I got this. I know how to put shoes on.” “We’ll meet you outside,” says one of my friends.
3:00 PM After a long walk, we had made it to the park. “What should we do?” asks one friend. “I don’t know, maybe we sh–” I’m cut off by CHAD–who we did not bring with us–who was holding my sunglasses.
5:00 PM I’ve built a fort before, but never with CHAD’s help. Normally, I could make a small teepee just large enough to fit inside in about 2 hours. In the same amount of time me, my friends, and CHAD (mostly CHAD) build a massive 2-story treehouse, with one ground floor and one up in the tree. CHAD has a huge amount of tools at his disposal, and one I always found interesting is this little tube that pops out of his arm that shoots nails. I thought it was useless until today. CHAD had developed a rhythm of finding a big log, chopping it into long, thin boards, then nailing them into the tree where we needed them using his nail gun thing. “Woah! Don’t point that at us!” I exclaim.CHAD responds confidently, “It’s impossible for me to harm you in any way, as there is a strict code governing my actions with my top priority being to please you.”
CHAD’s version of “please” me doesn’t always mean do what I want, sometimes what he thinks is best. Right now, though, CHAD is having as much fun as a chunk of metal can.
6:00 PM The fort is finally finished. After hours of CHAD working and my friends and I sitting and watching, the last touches have been added. “It should be durable enough to last quite a while,” states CHAD in his robotic voice. “You don’t have to brag about your building abilities, CHAD. Leave it at that,” says one of my friends. We begin to make the trek home, and it feels excruciatingly long due to CHAD feeling the need to explain every single plant we pass.
7:00 PM We make it home and walk into my parents’ serving dinner. Both of my parents are AI software developers and have pretty flexible hours, so they are sometimes home relatively early. My dad always explains how when he was young there weren’t any AI robots to clean up for you, make your food, and all that. He likes to make food on his own when he can, and he always tells me not to rely on CHAD too much. My mom always talks about old smartphones, before they were holographic. She says never to complain about a phone being slow nowadays because old ones would sometimes take more than 10 seconds to load. According to her, computers are so efficient now that her friends keep losing their jobs to robots.
10:00 PM After dinner, I get ready for bed, and CHAD and I resume our gaming. After hours of trying, I finally beat CHAD at a racing game. I’m so excited I tell my parents, and they congratulate me. “We’re so proud of you. What an important accomplishment,” says my dad, in the most sarcastic tone I have ever heard. I don’t tell them why I won though (CHAD ran out of battery) because that would ruin it.
11:00 CHAD enters parent mode, “Time to sleep. You need rest.” “Why do you wake me up at 6:00 then, if I need rest?” I counter. “Time to sleep. You need–”“Alright. I got it.”

5:00 AM This warm morning CAIMPP (Custom Artificial Intellectual Mechanica for Person of the Public) woke me up at 5 in the morning for practice. My schedule is embedded in its system, and it wakes me up at its calculated time at which I will be able to get ready so as to not be late. CAIMPP is a more expensive and updated version of the more widespread CHAD. To be honest, CHAD works just as well but I received mine as a prize in a competition. Speaking of which, I need to pack my gear for today!
6:00 AM I packed my hoverboard and helmet – wouldn’t want to get injured! Along with that, I put my CAIMPP SafetySure ⓒ line of limb protection for athletes. It automatically strengthens protective padding that is put under sports uniforms towards whatever part of the body is prone to or has already been injured. It’s beyond awesome – I would have gotten a concussion 2 years ago if I hadn’t worn it.
9:00 AM I finally came back from long practice. I think the only reason I haven’t passed out is because of CAIMPP’s water it made for me – it has an attachment to our sink and it custom adds vitamins, electrolytes, and minerals based on my physical activity sensed by my SmartBand.
I’m rereading Fahrenheit 451 right now and it’s amazing to think about society almost a century ago.
12:00 PM I decided to start some work and was able to stay focused on it for enough time to get something done. I pulled up the online page for history class. We were learning about the COVID-19 pandemic in the 2020s and how it shaped the future of epidemiology. After some work, CAIMPP must’ve sensed I was hungry because within what felt like 5 seconds it brought me the most interesting lunch I had ever seen. It was a sandwich, but instead of normal bread CAIMPP had used this synthetic sandwich bread and had put on more green stuff than I could’ve ever imagined.
3:00 PM After a few hours of wandering around, doing something for 5 minutes, then wandering around some more, CAIMPP decided it was time for a nap. According to my readings, your vitals suggest you should rest for about 60 minutes,” said CAIMPP.
“I feel fine, CAIMPP.”
“If you say so, but I will check your vitals frequently. However, if you aren’t going to rest you should partake in some sort of activity.”
“How about a walk?” I suggest.
Moments later we were out the door, along with my dog, Sparky, who had a special collar similar to my SmartBand that kept tabs on his vitals. We walked for a while until we reached a dog park. CAIMPP used all its gadgets to entertain Sparky while I mindlessly looked through my HoloPhone feed. Sometimes, it seems like CAIMPP can do jobs better than people, and it’s surprising that my parents haven’t lost their jobs to AI yet.
6:00 PM After we got home from our walk, my parents called me in for dinner. As we were eating, my mom was explaining how their day went. …And we made our case clear. Still, they keep pushing us aside for ‘more important cases,” my mom explained. Both of my parents are medical lawyers. Both of them love to explain all their law stuff to me, but it just goes over my head most of the time.
9:00 PM I walked into my room only to remember I still had schoolwork to do. I gained enough motivation to work on some sociology homework. We were studying how AI can affect human neurological responses through electronic implants, and the work was a nightmare. After a while, I decided I had done enough, and sat down to draw. My drawing program opened in an instant and its AI was already giving me ideas for a starting line. After I had finished the sketch, the AI automatically filled the lines and suggested colors. After coloring, it had me pick where the light was coming from and it automatically shaded shadows, creating a cohesive piece.
I wrapped up my drawing session and loaded up an online chess program. I was playing against an AI designed to help me out when I might lose, in order to teach me how to play the game properly and not mindlessly move pieces (that’s definitely not what I do). I reached a point where I thought I might win, but the AI pointed out a huge flaw in my plan and won the game easily. Don’t play chess against AI, you won’t win.
12:00 AM It was nearly midnight, but I was intrigued by this research paper written by Allysa Carson on the history of Mars Missions. CAIMPP’s monotone voice fills my room, “It is currently 12:00 AM. My sources say that you have very high serotonin levels, and you should go to sleep at this time.”
“But this article is so interesting!”
“My browser attachment states that you have already gone 35.37 minutes over your recommended screen time for today. You may have trouble falling asleep if you do not go to bed approximately within the next 21.536 minutes. At this time, you need to brush your teeth and wash your face for the night. You have approximately 6.2 more minutes on your article if you are to sleep in peace.”
“Ugh, FINE.” I got ready for bed, and CAIMPP finally exited my room, leaving me in peace.
I turn off the light and turn on my white noise machine. It wasn’t connected to CAIMPP–so I had to manually turn it on– but still uses AI so it can turn off the second I fall asleep.
Answers to prompts
A. An international agreement was made stating that all countries obtaining human-level or above AI must have a scientifically owned institution for training AI to know exactly when to obey, and when not to obey. These institutions are unaffected by the government and the government cannot control them internally. Keeping these institutions exclusive to the scientific community makes it as objective as possible, evading disagreement.
Q. The dynamics of an AI-filled world may depend a lot on how AI capability is distributed. In your world, is there one AI system that is substantially more powerful than all others, or a few such systems, or are there many top-tier AI systems of comparable capability? Or something else?
A. All systems must follow the same International AI Regulation Institution, that any AI system, government or AI run, is required to be part of. Any system must disclose all innovations to be judged safe or not, and all systems must follow the same Ethical AI Code under the Institution.
Q. How has your world avoided major arms races and wars, regarding AI/AGI or otherwise?
A. Major conflicts and tensions were avoided by ridding the world of its nuclear weapons. AI would help ensure that other countries aren’t building nuclear weapons, or more generally, enforcing international law. AI would be the international mind that alerted any other country of suspicious activity against it. This would hold true for all countries so everyone would be monitored and peace could be achieved.
Q. In the US, EU, and China, how and where is national decision-making power held, and how has the advent of advanced AI changed that?
A. Decision-making is held within a jointly run body between the EU, China, and the US. All three sides have a say in the political and financial decisions made, and each of the three parties has multiple internal government votes to decide on what decisions are made. AI then processes these decisions, and assures that no significant danger is created by them.
Q. Is the global distribution of wealth (as measured say by national or international gini coefficients) more, or less, unequal than 2021’s, and by how much? How did it get that way? (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gini_coefficient)
A. Due to the growth of the population, the money in the hands of the poor people will spread thinner, leading to somewhat more unequal wealth distribution than now. However, the overall standards of living will be higher, thanks to a growing economy, cheaper energy and AI regulations.
Q. What is a major problem that AI has solved in your world, and how did it do so?
A. There are several major problems AI helped to solve in our world: Loneliness (via AI companions and more social connections via AI-enhanced social networks); Education (personalized AI education) and Medicine availability ( personalized AI-assisted medicine, available 24/7 in any location)
Q. What is a new social institution that has played an important role in the development of your world?
A. The new social institution that plays a role in the development of our world is Parent Education Institute, providing free education and informational and psychological support to all families, whether they want to go on the path of public schooling or homeschooling.
Q. What is a new non-AI technology that has played an important role in the development of your world?
A. Best practices of human interactions, systems-thinking education, and large-scale decision-making educational technologies play important role in the development of our world. Other non-AI technologies include hobbies, such as wood-cutting, gardening, and board game hobbies.
Q. What changes to the way countries govern the development, deployment and/or use of emerging technologies (including AI) played an important role in the development of your world?
A. If AI is implemented, then countries are developed using this technology. AI is used as ambassadors, representing their country. This would make it a safer and more secure way of negotiating things where personal bias isn’t included. This makes it so that leaders don’t make decisions that purely benefit them. The robots are essentially speaking for the people.
Q. Pick a sector of your choice (education, transport, energy, healthcare, tourism, aerospace, materials etc.) and describe how that sector was transformed by AI in your world.
A. Transport – The transportation sector, especially rail travel (trains) is now run almost completely by specialized AI. AI helps to correct steering miscalculations to stop crashes, regulates throttle and brake power, etc…, but still, humans can always take control of the vehicle. AI also assists flight controllers in airports, helping to save time and avoid mishaps, and helps in ports with big sea containers, helping to regulate their placement.
Q. What is the life expectancy of the most wealthy 1% and of the least wealthy 20% of your world; how and why has this changed since 2021?
A. For the wealthy 1%, the life expectancy would be 90+, and for the least wealthy 20%, I’d say 70+. The wealthy will have more access to medical help, less stress, and more basic necessities than the 20%, allowing them to live longer, healthier lives, which is just SO messed up.
Q. In the US, considering the human rights enumerated in the UN declaration, which rights are better respected and which rights are worse respected in your world than in 2022? Why? How?
In one other country of your choice, which rights are better respected and which rights are worse respected in your world than in 2022? Why? How?
A. The human rights declaration would have to be significantly revised to include cyborgs. Hopefully, the rights of humans AND cyborgs will be better protected as a result. Article 4 would be better respected, prohibiting humans to held cyborgs as slaves, and vice versa. Articles 12 and 15 will be worse respected at the beginning and would need to be revised, to protect the rights of cyborgs for privacy and nationality. In China, the rights of privacy for humans and cyborgs will be especially affected. The rights to education will be more respected.
Q. What’s been a notable trend in the way that people are finding fulfillment?
A. Exploring therapy with AI – finding fulfillment with zootherapy and using AI in order to communicate with ones’ own feelings; music therapy, art therapy, etc with the help of AI; specific audio /music programs to stimulate calmness in the brain. Capture and conversion of more sounds from space.
